But before talking about the reason why this happens, let's see what Self-esteem is.

It is the sum of feelings, thoughts, evaluations and behaviors that a person has towards himself. This is starting to build since childhood and considerably influences the family and social environment where it develops. Upon reaching adolescence, a change arises in the way of seeing life and obtaining an attractive or accepted identity. But by not having the appropriate emotional bases, the young person could fall into self-destructive behaviors.

This materializes when the adolescent resorts to drugs, suicide or an attempt to commit suicide, to attract attention or escape from the reality in which he lives. Others harbor dark thoughts of revenge and end up harming family members or innocent people with the mistaken theory that they must also suffer. The truth is that the tranquility they seek it destroys them and more people.

Other destructive behaviors include reckless acts, where perhaps for fun or standing out, the life of himself or others is put at risk. These dangerous acts can occur in educational, recreational, and public settings. Unfortunately, the media, social networks or television spread them making them popular, causing an effect of imitation and behavior modification in many.

On the other hand, parents and teachers must be very attentive to adolescents who present explosive behaviors, talk about suicide, harm themselves or feel incompetent to carry out common and daily activities.

It is of special interest, those adolescents who live in homes with high levels of risk, product of sexual abuse, alcohol, drugs, prostitution, delinquency or psychiatric history.

Adequate self-esteem can prevent an adolescent from succumbing to self-destructive behaviors.

Well, the adolescent with good self-esteem feels safe and loved, so he is not manipulable and does not see the need to resort to emotional sticks to feel good. So, one of the keys to avoid self-destructive behaviors in adolescence is to build an appropriate self-esteem. from the beginning.

However, if the problem goes beyond a lack of affection, a hostile family environment, and other social factors, it may be necessary to timely evaluation from a mental health specialist, who rules out any pathology that could be controllable with medication or therapy, if necessary.
